Partners in Learning

The Partners in Learning Committee, which has been around since 1997, encourages reading among the students at Haviland Avenue School. This committee is compromised of six main parts: Donations/Fundraising, Family Learning Nights, Family Library Nights, Visiting Author/Illustrator program, Read Across America, and Summer Reading Program. The following is a brief description of these activities.

Donations/Fundraising

The Donation program enables individuals to donate money for the purchase of new books for the classroom libraries. This donation program runs from October through March, except for the month of December. A donation form is sent home at the beginning of each month. We work closely with the teachers to purchase materials. The Partners in Learning Committee also sponsors a family night at Audubon Applebee's and receives a portion of each family's check to use towards books for the children in the school.

Family Learning Nights

There are three evening programs one for each grade level. The program includes guest readers, a craft, and refreshments for the children while the parents go off with the teachers and learn a little about what goes on in the classroom. The students receive a book for their attendance. Students must be accompanied by an adult and pre-registration is required.

Visiting Author/Illustrator

This program sponsors a full day visit by an author or illustrator who presents a school wide assembly followed by various grade level workshops, a literary lunch and a book signing.

Read Across America

During Dr. Seuss's Birthday Week we provide each child in the school with new book to promote reading at home.

Summer Reading Program

The Partners in Learning Committee provides all children who participate in the Summer Reading Program with a certificate and a book at an assembly once the school year has resumed.

Please refer to the PTA calendar for a listing of all our events.
